Forward Fold (2022)

Plastic mesh, silk georgette, cotton thread (150mm x 85mm x 50mm)

Forward Fold speaks to the systems and routines that shape and confine behaviour in domestic space. The dimensions of this object reference the parameters of the artist’s own body in a forward-fold position at 1/8th scale. Reduced and abstracted to form a rectangular prism, this three-dimensional grid stands in for the body in a position of surrender, while also suggesting the shape of a room or cell. When held in one's hands, the work also takes on a nurturing, self-soothing tone. In this way, Forward Fold acts as a tool for reflection on the inconspicuous connections between domestic space, maintenance work and women's bodies.
